Hellenic Caucus History

In 1996, Representative Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) and former Representative Michael Bilirakis (R-FL), who retired from Congress in 2006, founded the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues. In 2007, Representative Gus M. Bilirakis (R-FL) became a co-chair of the Caucus. The purpose of this bi-partisan caucus is to foster and improve relations between the United States and Greece.

Purpose

The Caucus works to strengthen congressional engagement on key diplomatic, security, and human rights issues in the Eastern Mediterranean and surrounding region. Its members introduce legislation, organize briefings on current developments, and share information with policymakers and other interested parties.

The Caucus focuses on a range of issues, including U.S. assistance to Greece and Cyprus, the Cyprus problem, U.S. relations with countries in Eastern Europe, regional security and stability, the status of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and developments in the Aegean.
