On July 29, 2025, Jay Tourgoutian and Konstantine Kabilafkas represented the American Hellenic Council (AHC) at a fundraiser in Dana Point supporting Jim Desmond, Orange County Supervisor and candidate for California’s 48th Congressional District.
The event drew over sixty donors to a stunning, beachfront house with sweeping sea views and a spectacular sunset. A significant contribution from members of the Hellenic community was made, helping ensure our issues are heard by key policymakers. These fundraisers also provide valuable opportunities to share our concerns with leaders and fellow attendees.
Among the guests was Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA), a longtime friend of the late Aris Anagnos and the AHC. Both Issa and Desmond took time to engage with our representatives. Prior to Desmond’s speech and Q&A, we discussed critical topics such as Turkey’s ongoing violations of international law, the occupation of Cyprus, the EEZ, and the casus belli. Our map presentations sparked curiosity among bystanders, some even requesting copies.
Though new to these issues, Jim Desmond listened attentively and expressed a willingness to meet with the Council in his office after the election. Darrell Issa warmly reconnected with us, recalling his strong ties to AHC and familiarity and support of Greek issues. He’s also aware of the Turkish aggresion in the area. Finally he expressed appreciation for an invitation to our upcoming Gala and noted, with a smile, that the only reason he would ever visit Turkey is to meet the Ecumenical Patriarch.
During the Q&A, we were fortunate to ask one of only a few questions. We highlighted Turkey’s destabilizing role in the Eastern Mediterranean and its challenges toward Israel. We stressed that granting Turkey modern weapons like the F-35s would directly threaten Greece in the Aegean and Israel over Syria. Jim Desmond responded firmly, stating his support for Greece and Israel and opposition to Turkey acquiring the F-35s.
The evening also included some lighter moments, including a humorous anecdote shared by Congressman Issa that drew hearty laughter from the guests.
Following the event, and in a conversation with Jay Tourgoutian, Jim Desmond reiterated his interest in meeting with members of the Greek and Armenian communities.
