Understanding the Controversial Issues

Through decades of shifting international relations, nationalist movements, wars, and changes of government, there have been some issues that dominate the political conversations of Greece and Cyprus. These topics’ complexities and the multitude of national interests involved have resulted in many controversial debates, problems and attempted solutions.

The Annan Plan In 2004, UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, proposed a solution for the Cyprus issue, which caused great controversy in both Cyprus and Greece and was opposed by most of the citizens in both countries.This is now known as The Annan Plan and was never adopted.

The “Macedonian” Name Dispute and The Prespa Agreement The compromise deal that was meant to end a 26-year dispute over the use of the name “Macedonia” and the corresponding implications of irredentism is known as The Prespa Agreement.
