The AHC Board voted for endorsing Marcy Winograd in the Primary Election after Ms. Winograd promptly responded to our questionnaire regarding issues of concern to the Greek-American Community. A few highlights of her responses to the questions we asked her are listed below:
CYPRUS:
With regards to the occupation of part of Cyprus by Turkish military forces, what is your position and how do you think that US interests are best served there?
Marcy Winograd: I oppose the occupation of the northern part of Cyprus by Turkey and believe the autonomy of Cyprus should be respected. U.S. interests are best served by encouraging Turkey to end its occupation. Should I get elected in Congress, I would gladly introduce a resolution calling for an end to the occupation of Cyprus, and work to pressure Turkey to change its policies.
PATRIARCHATE:
Should you get elected, would you co-sign House Resolution 236 calling for the religious freedom of the Ecumenical Patriarchate?
Yes, absolutely.
What would your proposed course of action to pressure Turkey in granting religious freedom to the Ecumenical Patriarch as well as other minorities within its borders?
One possibility would be to cut back on economic aid to Turkey; another option would be to discuss the importance of freedom of religion vis a vis Turkish oppression, as the Turks seem to be particularly sensitive to world public opinion.
FYROM:
Would you be a supporter of House Resolution 486 (attached) should you be elected in Congress and what other course of action are you planning to take in conjunction with this issues’ resolution?
Yes, I would support working within the framework of the United Nations to resolve this issue.
GREEK SOVEREIGN DEBT CRISIS:
In case it is required in the future, would you support US Govt. Funds to be allocated under the IMF umbrella to Greece or other countries undergoing a sovereign debt crisis?
Yes, absolutely, I would support U.S. government funds for the IMF to support Greece through its debt crisis. I would also support global efforts to regulate speculation on the financial markets.
ABOUT OPPONENT JANE HARMAN:
To be noted here as well is the fact that the current incumbent, Congresswoman Harman, in the period leading up to the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, calling Greece "soft on terrorism", advocated for increased expenditures in security and anti-terrorism measures on behalf of the country. We deem that Ms. Harman's position resulted in increased, unnecessary expenditures on behalf of the Greek Govt. in security and other counter-terrorism measures as well as lower attendance of the Games on behalf of the American public. The result was an addition to Greece's fiscal woes that are only being realized today. The Olympic Games were organized with no terrorist incident whatsoever. Instead, it is our position that Ms. Harman was more concerned about to private security companies' and military contractors' interests that were bidding for contracts instead of our safety...
