LOS ANGELES - 6/28/2009

In June 2009, members of the Board of the American Hellenic Council had the chance to discuss issues that concern the Greek-American community with Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA46 at his district offices in Huntington Beach.

Present at the meeting were AHC President Michael Galanakis, Huntington Beach resident Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks as well as James Pilafas of Orange County.

The AHC Board Members discussed the issue of religious freedoms of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Turkey and presented the Council's efforts in ending the occupaction of Northern Cyprus by Turkish Troops.

The Congressman was receptive to both issues and was open to signing on House Resolution 236 which calls for Turkey to respect the religious freedoms of its citizens and in particular those of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

He was also open to singing on to a resolution calling for a just solution to the division of Cyprus.

Our Board Members also presented Congressman Rohrabacher with the name dispute with the F.Y.R.O.M. They informed him and his staff how the name dispute represents only the tip of the iceberg on what the governemnt in Skopje is trying to achieve; mainly an expansionist policy that can lead to unjustified land claims in Greece proper.
